Is NBA gambling that much worse than dog fighting?

Donaghy faces 25 years in prison for a gambling scheme that lasted six months. Michael Vick is negotiating with authorities for a term of 18 months in the penitentiary in a dog fighting scheme that lasted for six years. Is NBA gambling that much worse than dog fighting?

Okay Donaghy was a trusted referee, and disgraced the NBA, but what did he really do, he participated in illegal gambling. I mean is that really worse then funding an illegal dog fighting operation, in my mind clearly no!

With the popularity of gambling these days, it just doesn’t seem like such a severe crime. I believe that Donaghy should be obviously kicked out of the NBA, not allowed to legally bet on sports ever again, pay a huge fine, and maybe up to 18 months in prison, but 25 years is just ridiculous.

Emotional pain is always worse than physical.

White collar crime deserves white collar punishment.

I could not agree with your post more. There is no way in my mind that abusing and murder on multiple occasions for profit, is a lower offense than gambling. It defies logic and is yet another example of why our country is in need of great societal change.

Anon - what the hell are you talking about??? Neither of these crimes are white collar. Animal abuse and murder, and running a gambling ring for the mob, does not fall within what most would consider white collar offenses. Further, white collar punishments, 9 out of 10 times equates to a plea deal of a few months to a few years in a country club. So, explain what you're feeling here player..

Well, the maximum penalty for dogfighting is 6 years, and the maximum for the transmitting betting information is 5. However, the other 20 years Donaghy is facing is for Wire Fraud, and all the charges that both men are facing are conspiracy charges. Take that for what it's worth.

25 years it way too harsh. Gambling has becoming something that people do for fun and on vacation. In this case there should be a punishment and fine, but not 25 years in jail. I think that more actual harm came out of the dog fighting. I have heard much more media debate about Vick's crimes. He was being paid to endorse companies products, and had a shoe coming out. I think he had more to lose, and I wonder why someone in his position would even risk his career. I can understand why people gamble, not to the level that Donaghy was involved, but I do not and never will understand how anyone can find entertainment value in watching animals fight to the death. It is barbaric and disgusting. Vick deserves to be in jail, worse actually.
